Largest ice cave in the world

The Eisriesenwelt near Werfen is the largest ice cave in the world and a spectacular natural wonder that attracts thousands of visitors from all over the globe each year. The first 1,000 meters of the cave are open to tourists, showcasing gigantic ice formations, including the 25-meter-high Great Ice Wall. Located high in the Tennengebirge mountains at 1,656 meters above sea level, this adventure also offers breathtaking views over Salzburg’s countryside.

  • Temperature: Always below 0°C – warm clothing and sturdy footwear required.

  • Admission: Adults €42 (including cable car); reduced rates for children and groups.

  • Photography and filming inside the cave are not allowed.

  • Guided tours: Appr. 75 min, in German & English.

  • Dogs: Allowed, provided they can handle stairs.

Getting There

  • By car: About 40 km south of Salzburg to Werfen; parking available at the visitor center.

  • By public transport: Shuttle bus from Werfen train station directly to the cable car station.

  • To the entrance: From the visitor center, proceed on foot or take the cable car (about a 3-minute ride), followed by a 20-minute walk to the cave entrance.
