The picturesque Cinque Terre are among the most iconic and charming villages in all of Italy. Strung like colorful pearls along the rugged Ligurian coastline, they offer a truly unique landscape. Thanks to a historic railway line that has been winding along the cliffs since the 19th century, the villages are easily accessible by regional train. Numerous coastal and hillside trails lead through the Cinque Terre National Park and offer breathtaking views. Alternatively, regular ferry services provide a stunning perspective of the colorful towns from the sea.
This 3-day itinerary is designed to help you explore the highlights of Cinque Terre at a relaxed pace.

Best time to visit: April, late September, and October – ideal for hiking.

Getting Around

  • Cinque Terre Card:
This pass allows unlimited travel by train and bus between the villages and includes access to the Sentiero Azzurro, the most famous hiking trail in the area. Whether you plan to walk, take the train, or a mix of both, the card is often worth it. Available as a Trekking or Train Card for 1–3 days.

  • Leave the car behind:
Cinque Terre is best explored without a car. The narrow, winding roads and scarce, expensive parking make driving inconvenient. If you do want to go by car, you can manage it with a bit of preparation (parking outside the villages or at your hotel). However, we recommend the frequent trains and hiking paths.

  • Parking tips:
If you're coming from Genoa or Pisa by car, consider parking in Levanto or La Spezia. Monterosso also has parking, though it tends to be more expensive.

  • Boat rides:
A boat trip along the dramatic cliffs is absolutely worth the cost – it offers a rare and unforgettable view of the coastline that you won’t get from land.

Escaping the Crowds

  • Find some peace and quiet:
The region can get very crowded, especially in peak season. For a more tranquil experience, try exploring alternative hiking trails in the national park. Amazingly, most visitors only see 3% of the National Park – and apart from the Sentiero Azzurro, all trails are free to access.

  • Corniglia, the quietest of the five villages, is a great place to slow down.

  • Early mornings and late afternoons are generally the best times to visit for a more peaceful atmosphere.

More Tips for Your Visit

  • Don’t rush it!
There's plenty to see, but the Cinque Terre are at their most beautiful when you take the time to soak in the atmosphere and simply pause now and then. If you can, consider adding an extra day to your trip.

  • Souvenirs with soul:
Many villages feature artisan shops selling handmade souvenirs that reflect the vibrant spirit of the Cinque Terre.

Day 1 Arrival in Monterosso

Your Cinque Terre experience begins in Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the five villages and the only one here with a proper sandy beach. Perfect for taking a breath and settling in.

Highlights of the day:

  • Old town walk: Monterosso has a small, charming old town – perfect for a stroll through the narrow streets and an espresso stop at a small café.

  • Fegina Beach: This is a great place to relax. Grab a towel and enjoy the sea view.

  • A dinner with sea view is a great start to your vacation. Order a typical Ligurian dish (pesto is a must!), accompanied by a glass of regional white wine.

Day 2: An Excursion to Vernazza and Corniglia

Today, two villages await you that couldn't be more different!

Morning in Vernazza:
Getting up early is worth it! You'll be in Vernazza in just a few minutes by train. Here, a charming backdrop of colorful houses and a harbor where boats gently rock awaits you. So, enjoy a cappuccino at the harbor with the magnificent view.

  • Doria Castle: A short climb – the view from up here is worth every effort.

  • Santa Margherita di Antiochia: This 14th-century church is right by the water and definitely worth a visit.

  • There are two wonderful photo spots, each at opposite ends of the village – check the map for exact locations

Day 2 Afternoon

Next stop: Corniglia, the smallest and highest village of the Cinque Terre. Unlike its neighbors, it doesn’t have direct access to the sea – which makes it a peaceful retreat with an authentic feel.

From the train station, you can either take the shuttle bus to the village center or choose the more active option: climb the Lardarina staircase with its 382 steps. The effort is well worth it – the views along the way are spectacular.

  • Santa Maria Terrace: Offers a great panorama of the coastline and the surrounding vineyards.

  • Wine tasting: Sample the Cinque Terre DOC – a dry white wine with a fresh, sea-breezy character that perfectly reflects the region.

Day 3: The Colors of Manarola & Riomaggiore

A day to discover the southernmost villages of Cinque Terre.

Manarola and Riomaggiore are famous for their pastel-colored houses that cling dramatically to the rugged cliffs.
Start your day with a stroll to the Punta Bonfiglio viewpoint – from here, you'll enjoy one of the most iconic postcard views of Manarola. A short walk through the surrounding vineyards is also well worth it: the mix of sea views and terraced hillsides is simply enchanting.

Afterward, you can either hop on the train to Riomaggiore or choose a more scenic route on foot:

  • Via dell’Amore (check if open!!)
This romantic coastal path stretches for about 1 km and connects Manarola with Riomaggiore. Hugging the cliffs above the sea, it offers spectacular views of the coastline. After years of renovation, the paved and easy-to-walk trail has finally reopened. There’s an entrance fee (around €15), but the stunning scenery makes it one of the highlights of your trip.

Day 3: Afternoon in Riomaggiore

Next up is Riomaggiore, the southernmost village of your Cinque Terre journey. Here, everything is bathed in soft pastel tones, and the tightly packed houses seem to cling to the cliffs to keep from falling into the sea.

Start your visit at the small harbor, where colorful boats bob gently in the water and the air smells of salt. You’ll likely take your first photos here: the view from the marina up toward the steeply stacked houses is unique, even by Italian standards.

For a quiet moment - and the best spot to sunset view - hike up to one of the panoramic viewpoints above the village.

In the evening, unwind with fresh seafood and a glass of Sciacchetrà, the region’s sweet dessert wine.

  • Optional boat tour: A perfect way to see the villages from a completely new perspective
